Colorado State University With draws from BLM’s Gruesome Sterilization Experimental Study of Warm Springs Herd Wild Mares

Colorado State University just announced that they are “withdrawing our partnership on the surgical spaying of mares. The project is led by the Bureau of Land Management and USGS. The decision to withdraw was made with the support of our involved researchers. ”
This is a tremendous victory for our wild horses and for everyone who wrote the 12,000 excellent comments that the BLM received against this horrific and deadly procedure being used on 100 wild mares, many of them pregnant, from the Warm Springs Herd Management Area in Oregon.
I want to personally thank everyone who sent comments in, who called and emailed CSU and who got the word out against this. Using sterilization on our wild horses and burros , besides being inhumane, cruel, and completely unnecessary it is also contrary to managing wild horses where they are found with the least invasive methods as per the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act.

Thank goodness they have shown some sense wiithdrawing from this abisive plan.
Gelleding stallions is easy, quick and vets have had lots of practice with that operation.
This is just like when women were held responsible for having so many babies. The operation on women was serious. Finally people were told to use a condom. Just put it on and go. To try to spay these beautiful mares is when they don’t know what they’re doing is a sick disgrace. The people in “the house” are idiots with no knowledge of what they are passing.
NOW just need to work on B LM to quit rounding up wild horses in the cruel methods they have been using AND lying to the people about it being necessary to remove x amount of horses from so so many acres.

I read where someone had a method to inject hormones so the mares won’t get pregnant. The cost was significantly lower than the cost of rounding up, killing and disposing of unwanted horses. I wonder if that is really feasible and if it would work.
There are proven and safe birth control drugs that work on wild horses. There is no need to butcher them.
Thank God ,so glad they’re stopping this barbaric act !!!!,. They need to castrate most of the stallions, leaving a choice few for breeding, & leave the mares alone !!!!
They do not need to castrate the stallions. There is no overpopulation of wild horses on our public lands.
Oh, thank heavens. Watching the videos wasn’t just sickening, it was profoundly disturbing. No human being should ever be involved in such cruelty. I’m glad we can work on the rest of the plan; getting the government to abide by the law!
The one thing that I did say to the BLM about what they had planned for these innocent horses. I told them loud an clear that the BLM should be removed from any contact with any of these wild horses, legally that might be done if a honest politician can be found that would take that on. Also told them that the horses would be safer if the BLM was replaced by honest horse people that cared something about the horses. The crooks might be spooked about what I said because that is what should be done that should have been done years ago. That would take a large amount of taxpayer dollars out of their hands.
Perhaps there needs to be an “investigation” into this recent sterilization episode? It’s time for some accountability including fines and jail time for out right cruelty to these animals. Every person that supported this outrageous act of cruelty should be FIRED. This type of medical incompetence couldn’t possibly be condoned by any state government or state Veterinary Medical Assoc. that I know of. These people should be held accountable because no reputable, ethical large animal Veterinarian would be a part of this inhumane procedure. I believe their names, employment titles, state and locations where this occurred – all of it needs to be exposed. Did any of these people have a legitimate Veterinary license? I doubt any tax payer any where would have agreed to such a cruel and inhumane experiment.

The practice of maming, controlling, and even killing our wild horses has got to be permanently halted. These exquisite creatures are perhaps what is left of our great historical wilderness as so many species are being pummeled to extinction. Let us be united in all efforts to protect our equines for all time.
