If you are wondering how a documentary film can help save wild horses, then this episode with my guest, Ashley Avis, about her film Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West is for you.
Ashley Avis is an American director, screenwriter, producer and co-founder of Winterstone Pictures. A passionate advocate for horses, she is also the Founder & President of The Wild Beauty Foundation. Ashley embarked on what would become a five-year-long passion project in her award-winning documentary Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West, exploring the stunning natural beauty as well as the controversial government treatment of wild horses in the United States. This year, she was awarded a Special Congressional Commendation for her work by Congresswoman Dina Titus.
Join me in discovering Ashley’s winding road from horse lover to wild horse advocate. We discuss how an exploratory journey to the wild horse heartlands to film Black Beauty led her to filming her documentary, which became both an interesting look at wild horses and their families and a journalistic exposé on the corruption that’s happening to them.
To celebrate the launch of this show, I’m giving away a 12”x18” metal print of Blue Zeus called Into the Blue, and two signed copies of my book, Blue Zeus: Legend of the Red Desert, to three lucky listeners who follow, rate, and review the show. Click here to learn more about the contest and how to enter, I’ll be announcing the winners in a future episode.

Wonderful podcast! What a beautiful, heartbreaking film Ashley Avis has produced. Visually, it is breathtaking. Watching the wild horses , their majestic beauty, the love they portray for each other, the joy of seeing them running so wild and free, it touches your heart in a way that only animals can. Then, comes the round-ups, the absurdity of the BLMS’ flimsy excuses for capturing the horses and the defeating experience of watching these, once spirited animals, standing with dulled eyes in abject dejection in crowded corrals where they are destined to live out their lives. Ashley narrates the movie and her love, compassion, anger and sadness comes through clearly in her voice. I was heartened to hear all this in her voice again during this podcast, as well as fierce determination. Thank you for having this podcast. It has helped to lift spirits after watching the documentary. #istanwithwildhorses
