It’s time to make the calls. Congress is considering the 2026 Appropriations Bill which is in very rough form and in it the Wild Horses and Burros Program is being cut by 25% (most of their budget goes to feeding and maintaining the horses in holding facilities). The prohibition against outright killing or selling healthy wild horses and burros without limitation is NOT in the White House Budget Request as it has been every year before now. This is the deadly playbook from Project 2025.
From pages 528-529: “The BLM’s multi-pronged approach in its 2020 Report to Congress46 included expanded adoptions and sales of horses gathered from overpopulated herds; increased gathers and increased capacity for off-range holding facilities and pastures; more effective use of fertility control efforts; and improved research, in concert with the academic and veterinary communities, to identify more effective — 528 —2025 Presidential Transition Project contraceptive techniques and strategies. All of that will not be enough to solve the problem, however. Congress must enact laws permitting the BLM to dispose humanely of these animals.”
If the budget passes without the prohibition against slaughter, 64,000 wild horses and burros are at risk of being killed, as well as the 10,712 wild horses that are scheduled to be rounded up and removed and placed in holding this year before the end of Fiscal Year 2025 on October 1. Yes, this includes the Salt Wells Creek and Adobe Town Herds.

Tell them that you are calling about the 2026 Appropriations Bill for the Bureau of Land Management and that you want language to prohibit funding for the purposes of killing healthy wild horses or burros or selling them without limits (slaughter) is kept in the 2026 Appropriations Bill. Our wild horses need you now more than ever. And we need to keep calling.

I believe I was reading about the Black Mountain Herd (Cal?) that the FS in their infinite wisdom felt that rather than possibly increase the “herd” of EIGHT horses – ALL mares – they wanted to bring in sheep, goats & cattle to “remove wildfire fuel”! Since the FS was responsible for removing the one stallion some time ago, of course this little herd is unable to reproduce!
Honestly, I cannot come up with a description better than absolute stupidity!
Sorry, Carol, this isnt what you wrote about, but frankly, the lack of intelligence, empathy and concept of how much Wild Horses (NATIVE Wild Horses I might add) contribute to our world through their beauty as well as to Nature itself
really frosts me.
And of course if they cannot eradicate them one way they will for sure do it in the most cruel & abusive way they can.

I apologize for yet another comment – but this is what I sent to my Representative (Democrat). I sure do hope it tweeks his interest!

This is the deadly playbook from Project 2025. Yet one more attempt to create devastation towards our Wild Horses and Burros. Republicans have attempted this time after time, and so far its been prevented by that simple prohibition. But just as this administration & it’s overseers (Project 2025) want to sell off our Public Lands and clear cut our National Forests – they have no hesitation about pushing the “humane” disposal of more than 64,000 Wild Horses, plus any Burros in these “holding” situations.
No hesitation about slaughtering thousands of Wild Horses and Burros to “solve the problem. Congress must enact laws permitting the BLM to dispose humanely of these Wild Horses. So in order to solve this problem, they want Congress to enact laws permitting the BLM to dispose humanely of these animals, in order to do it “legally”.
This Bill would cut the Wild Horse & Burros Program by 25% and since most of their budget goes to feed and maintain the horses in holding facilities.
It appears that both my Senators believe the BLM propaganda – whether the actually believe it or if this subject is just not considered important enough to spend time on it.
I’m old enough to remember the hullaballoo in 1971 when the WHB Act was originally passed. A huge part of this entire country – thousands of school children spoke out and made a big enough outcry that the Act was passed. It wasnt perfect, but it saved and protected many of our Wild Horses at that time.
I hope this might be of interest to you and your staff.
I realize we in NYS might not have any Wild Horse Herds here – but many people travel out West just to be able to actually see pieces of our history!
Leave our wild horses and burros BE on OUR public, paid for land with our taxes. We The People are their voice and we stand by them. NO TO LETHAL ROUNDUPS!

Stop the cruel inhumane slaughter with helicoptor roundups of these beautiful wild free roaming horses and burros from BLM lands that have been the living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West for centuries. Hence the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Stop the privitation of these BLM lands to cattle ranchers whose livestock will decimate these BLM lands.

What are you people thinking!?!? Horses are the backbone of our culture today! We have to protect our horse history and protect their livelihood . Let’s work together to save as many wild horses and be smart and fair to them who are really just being wild and left alone.

Please do not waste taxpayer dollars to do an unnecessary roundup. They live in a very remote area and are wild and free and appear to be extremely healthy and well fed . Public lands belong to us all not just to ranchers

How dare you and I mean how dare you think that these horses do not have the right to round free I’d like to know who they are hurting I’d like to talk to them and find out why they’re so against some wild horses running around feeding their selves, taking care of their own young Maybe you need to cut back on some of your cattle if you don’t have enough land for them and there’s nothing wrong with everybody sharing the land. That’s what it’s here for nobody said the cattle people own it all and the horses are there for everyone to enjoy and to support I don’t live out west but I wished I did. I wished I had the money and I would buy thousands of acres and I would make sure those horses had enough places to live free but I don’t. I only have a voice and it says leave them alone. I hope God doesn’t judge you because you’re taking up too much air in the world also Think about that.

Leave the horses be, why do ypu feel the need to remove them. theres not many places you can go and see wild horses and I wish I could go and see them

Stop the round ups! These horses should be left free and unstressed by in human round ups. They end up dead at the site or in the slaughter pipeline.

Horses are meant to live Free. Stop the round ups and the brutal way they are driven to exhaustion. These animals are amazing creatures, better than humans. Stop this insanity.
History has seen horses running on these lands longer than man. What a tragedy to allow ourselves to be defeated by them opting to rid them rather than respecting the history we find ourselves valuable enough to manage. What a coup it would be to prove man can be inclusive of such magnificence and freedom. Our world just gets smaller and smaller.
